Fall Training for Fascism
This election reminded me of when I was a kid collecting baseball cards, looking forward to spring training and trying to scope out which of the young phenoms was going to be the next Stan Musial, Bob Feller, Joe DiMaggio or Jackie Robinson. Most of them didn’t live up to the hype that surrounded them. But some did and owning the rookie card of someone like Sandy Koufax or Hank Aaron was a real badge of honor a few years later.
The corporate oligarchs who poured millions into 2010 election were having a fall training camp, trying to scope out which of the rookie phenoms had the Rightwing Stuff for the Big Show. Christine O’Donnell, Carl Paladino, Sharron Angle and Tom Tancredo didn’t make the first cut. But Rand Paul, Mark Kirk, and Marco Rubio did.
Now fall training is over and a new political season is about to begin. Big money goes to those who can show the best Rightwing Stuff. Those who know how to inspire deadly fear in a batter, terror in a pitcher or can elbow a shortstop and then bloody their spikes on the 3rd baseman will attract serious corporate cash. They’ll be playing in the big leagues now and what ever it takes to win, well, that’s what it takes to win.
Then if our entire economic system crashes, as it almost did in the waning days of the Bush years, the corporate oligarchs will need their Most Valuable Player. This would be the man or woman who can pitch the perfect political game or hit the 9th inning political grand slam that makes them the national hero that a corporate oligarchy needs when it appears fascism is only answer to a grave crisis.
So watch these rookies closely. You may be seeing the face of future fascism, up close and personal.
Have a nice evening.
